6 ways to help you relax after a stressful day at work

When you get home from a long day at work, what is the one thing you want to do more than anything else? Relax.

Yet it isn’t as easy as getting in the front door, sitting down and becoming an oasis of calm. You’ll still have the stress of the day with you, your mind might be whirring about problems with work and if you’ve got a young family to look after, then good luck finding any downtime at all.

Your body needs it though and with that in mind, we’ve put together this list of six ways to help you relax after a stressful day at work.

Exercise

If you’ve got a lot of pent up stress from the day you’ve had, then running can help get it out of you and make you more relaxed at the same time. Exercise releases endorphins which interact with your brain and trigger positive feelings. If you’re feeling happier, you’ll find it easier to relax. You don’t need to run a marathon, just a 20-minute breeze around the block.

Take a warm bath or shower

You can wash away the stresses of work quite literally with a warm bath or shower. Water has a calming effect on the mind and soul while a hot shower can help your muscles relax and remove all the tension from your body.

Read something

Sometimes the best way to escape the chaos of your world is to slip into another. Whether you escape through the pages of a fantasy novel or by reading some of the goings on from across the world on a news site like Councilchronicle.Com, reading can transport our minds to another place and that is a sure-fire way to relax from stresses of your life.

Listen to music

Seek some peace and quiet by listening to calm music. The genre we pick can hugely influence our mood, so be sure to stick on slow music that you can breathe along with. This will also help slow your heart rate, relaxing your body at the same time.

See friends

You might think that the last thing that will help you relax is by putting yourself through the rigors of socializing. Yet going to dinner with friends or catching a movie can be a great way to relax. You’ll feel at ease in their presence, you’ll most likely have a laugh and a joke and most importantly, if you are out socializing you won’t have time to think about the stresses of the day. If you aren’t thinking about those, chances are you’ll be far more relaxed.

Turn off electronic devices an hour before bed

How many of us get into bed and start checking emails or social media? You aren’t giving yourself much hope of a good night’s sleep if immediately before you go to sleep, you are asking your mind to keep whirring. Turn off all electronic devices at least one hour before going to bed to allow your mind to switch off. You’ll find you get a much better nights sleep and will be much more relaxed for it as well.
